Welcome to the page for Elegy

“It is not uncommon for conductors to get emails from aspiring composers asking us to listen to new works and consider performance.  I am so thankful that the stars were in alignment when I received the message from Danny Hansen about his Elegy for Winds. Something in me connected to the phrasing and structure of the piece... The piece is as beautiful as it is intricate to rehearse, and it was a pleasure to host Danny on our campus for the premiere performance.”

-Dr. Brian Lamb, Director of Bands at University of Central Oklahoma

  • Toward the end of grad school, I had rekindled my love of the classics. Immediately-relatable melodies and forms focused on clarity were among the features I was most drawn to. Following my graduate studies, I was determined to have a public performance of a work for large ensemble.

Elegy is the result of those concurrent desires. Its focus is on melody is evident from the anacrusis. Formally, the piece is an unambiguous ternary.

This piece is not an elegy for anyone or anything in particular. Though I generally struggle titling piece, the self-evidently elegiac character of the work resulted in the piece practically titling itself.

    Thanks for listening,

    Danny
